Resisting Numbness to the Gospel

(HT: Crossway)

We may know the gospel. We may believe it—even proclaim it. But we also may assume the gospel and become lethargic. In his book, Gospel Wakefulness, Jared Wilson seeks to answer the central question, how do we experience and present the gospel in a fresh, nonroutine way in order to prevent ourselves and others from becoming numb? By presenting the unchangeable gospel again and again. He says:

What I have discovered in my ministry, which draws directly from God’s ministry to me in my own life, is that those who possess saving faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins and the hope of heaven when they die can and do grow numb to any number of religious and spiritual experiences, no matter how well orchestrated and sincerely produced. But those—saved and unsaved—who find themselves utterly captivated by the gospel can hardly be entertained by anything else.
