What should you do when temptation, discouragement, doubt, or spiritual attack comes?
Charles Spurgeon’s answer is wonderfully practical:
“Be more prayerful every time he [the devil] is more active. He will soon give it up, if he finds that his attacks drive you to Christ.”
Think about that.
The enemy intends his attacks to drive you away from Christ. But by God’s grace, those same attacks can drive you closer to Christ—in prayer, faith, Scripture, and dependence upon Him.
Spurgeon even gives us this memorable picture:
“Often has Satan been nothing but a big black dog to drive Christ’s sheep nearer to the Master.”
That is one of the themes running through The Armor of God and Spiritual Warfare, a collection of Spurgeon’s sermons on Ephesians 6 and other passages about the Christian’s spiritual battle.
Spurgeon helps us learn to recognize the battle without becoming consumed by it—and to depend upon the armor and strength God provides.
He writes:
“Faith, then, is like a shield, because it has to bear the blows.”
The Christian life does not promise freedom from every blow. God gives us something better: armor for the battle, strength to stand, and certain hope in Christ.
Inside the book you’ll find sermons on the shield of faith, sword of the Spirit, helmet of salvation, gospel of peace, prayer, Satan’s attacks, and victory in Christ—along with study questions, prayer prompts, and practical appendices for applying the armor of God.
